Techniques
I begin by applying multiple layers of traditional gesso, gently heated in a bain marie. Once dry, the surface is carefully sanded to achieve a smooth, marble like finish.
I then draw my designs onto the gessoed board before engraving and raising areas with gesso to create depth and detail.
Next, I apply coloured layers beneath the gold leaf; these tones subtly influence the appearance of the gold above.
Finally, I water gild the surface and burnish the raised areas with an agate stone, polishing them to a mirror like finish.
About
I studied at the City & Guilds of London Art School, where I trained in traditional methods and materials that continue to inform my practice today.
My work centres on carved and raised gesso panels, which I water gild and burnish using gold and silver leaf. Each piece is made by hand, using time honoured techniques to create textured, luminous surfaces.
I draw inspiration from the natural world, particularly flora and fauna, which I combine with traditional decorative techniques, including water and oil gilding, raised and carved gesso, lacquerwork, and verre églomisé, a historic process of applying gold or silver leaf to glass. These methods allow me to produce detailed, radiant works that blend traditional craftsmanship with a contemporary sensibility.
My pieces have been exhibited in galleries across the UK, including the Rebecca Hossack Gallery in London, and I welcome commissions for bespoke artworks. Whether you’re looking for a unique focal point for your home, a custom panel for an interior project, or a meaningful gift, I’m happy to work with you to bring your vision to life.
